The Adirondack chair, originally known as the Westport Plank Chair, was created in 1903 by Thomas Lee at his family lake house in Westport, New York.
​
Initially crafted from just 11 planks of timber, these chairs were designed with a slanted seat to provide stability in the uneven and steep lakeside terrain in that area.
Having now evolved into a comfortable and stylish outdoor summer lounger, these chairs are now known by many names, including the Cape Cod Chair, Adirondack Chair, Muskoka Chair, or the Laurentian chair.​​​​
